Magnolia Petroleum Corp plans immediate drilling on its No 1 Tom Peay deep wildcat in central-north Andrews County aiming for 14 000 feet, potentially the county’s second deepest well. Nearby operations include University No 1 AK wildcat and Magnolia No 1 G T Hall wildcat with minor gas shows and core samples.
The Andrews Mustangs travel to Morton to face the Morton Eagles in a return game after their 46 to 33 home win. In Ozowa tournament action they lost to Ballinger 44 to 37, after earlier beating May 30n 59 to 36. Bobby Jean Jones led scoring with 15 points in the Ballinger game while Jock Smith added 17 in that contest. Don Floyd contributed 10 with four field goals and two free throws.
A community carol sing along is planned for Saturday night downtown. The event sponsored by the Woman's Forum begins at seven p m on the courthouse lawn near the lighted Christmas tree with church and school groups encouraged to participate.
The note recalls Christmas nine years after Pearl Harbor with fear and emotion blending into the season. The staff admits it has not mailed cards but sends readers best wishes for a Christmas that inspires faith in God and hope for the future.
Funeral services for Jackie Lynn Jones 11 months old were held at the First Christian Church with Rev E Brand delivering the sermon. Jackie Lynn died in a Midland Hospital from a heart attack December 19 and was buried here. he is survived by his parents and a sister Norma Faye. The family formerly lived here and now resides in Rankin.
Mustang drive in theatre closes for the season with manager Jimmy Burleson announcing plans for spring opening. New services include a lunch concession serving chicken and shrimp and the addition of playground devices.
Santa Claus visits Rose Theatre at 3 p.m. for a free movie and Christmas tree party hosted by merchants and the Lions Club. At 3 to 6 p.m. candy bags are handed out by Lion committee members. Santa then heads to the junior high gym for an underprivileged children party at 7 p.m. with gifts from Lions and local donors.
The Lions Club held its annual Christmas dinner and ladies night with 110 attendees the highest since the club’s founding. Guest speaker Lion Jimmy Dougherty of Midland discussed plans for a crippled children’s camp near Kerrville and the group praised volunteers who repaired toys for underprivileged children.
Mr and Mrs Ottie P Ho man received word their son Ottie with the first Marine division in Korea is safe. He was with the northern group of Marines that fought their way out of the Communist China trap to Hungnan port. His letter to his wife from Hungnan was written on December 13.
Under Miss Alice Cade the Andrews high school presented its annual Christmas pageant in the high school auditorium. Superintendent T D Mamiton read. Christene Harrell played Mary and Carl Hugen Joseph. Gabriel and wise men and shepherds were cast. Numerous angels appeared, with carols performed by the high and junior high choruses. Costuming and staging were managed by Susie Riey Cade Bryan Baker, with Mrs Campbell on piano and Alvin Conaway Donald Nolan Clyde Bush handling stage and lighting.
The fifth grade of Miss Bernice Boze presented a Christmas program at the Andrews public school Tuesday. Reading and carols were performed. The cast included Ralph Wright, Graham Burkett, Delores Povd, Barbara Taylor, Gary Park, Eve Lee Gavitt, Avanda Bruton, Kathleen Noble, and Larry Burgin in What is Christmas. Sonny Oswalt opened with There’s a Song in the Air as the angel and Mary scenes unfolded with shepherds and wise men watching Mary and Joseph. Dwight Day and others played shepherds, while Johnson, Sonny Dyer, and Ronnie Dyer were the wise men. The choir provided soft background as many students participated. A second play featured Lavonne Ingram as Mary and Gene Stone as Joseph with shepherds Troy Greenfield and others, and Wise Men Joe Dan Walker and Dwain Mitchell among the cast. An angel was Ann Pilgrim, with many others as angels.
Fifth grade pupils presented Cinderella and Christmas stories in a Tuesday program. Cast included Georgia Mossman as Cinderella and supporting roles by Ann Brown Martha Tripplehorn Betty Lou Thames. Robert Leisure played the King with Joe Dan Walker as Duke Dwain.
An all church Christmas program was held at 7 p m Monday in the First Baptist Church. The Beginners Department sang three numbers, the Primary Department sang Away in a Manger, Joe Neal Brown read scripture, Jodie Smith played Silent Night, the Junior Department sang Joy to the World, Lonel Nix read The Whole World Comes to Bethlehem, June Ann Brown played It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, and Harold Wayne Brand played piano. Lonnie Nix and Linda Williams contributed readings, and the Eleven and Twelve Year Olds sang I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day. The Intermediate Department performed Since Jesus Came, followed by a Christmas tree and Santa handing out treats to children.
The Faithful Workers Sunday School Class of Fullerton Baptist Church held a combined monthly meeting with a Christmas program in the church Educational Building. Bob Dietrich opened with prayer, and Mrs. F. E. Jones gave a devotional titled Where Is He. Mrs. Lowder sang O Little Town of Bethlehem with piano accompaniment by Mrs. Bob Fowler. Games included The First Christmas and Rachel and Jacob. Santa Claus distributed gifts and treats after the benediction by Mrs. Pob Dietrich.
The Philips 66 Home Demonstration Club held its annual Christmas party Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Mrs. Max Hensley’s home with co hosts Mrs. Co L Leisure and Mrs. W H Weaver. A short program and gift exchange followed by refreshment plates were served. Present were Mrs. Glenn Day and others.
A beautiful pageant depicting the birth of Jesus Christ was presented at 7 39 p m Monday at the First Christian church. Mrs Arthur Burns directed the production and read scriptures before each scene and sang.
A large number of college students are home for the holidays with many names from Texas schools listed. Students seen around town include Bobby Holman Cisco JC Ferrer Dan Nixon Hoyt McClintock Baylor G I Madison Wade Mitchell Hobbs and more from Hardin Simmons McMur ray Freddy Barrett Don Satterwhite John Tarleton San Angelo JC and others from Texas Tech Abilene Christian College West Texas State Teachers College Draughon Business College and Lubbock campuses.
Only one worship service will be held at the Methodist church Sunday led by Rev. Raymond Van Zandt. The 10 a m service for Christmas Eve is scheduled with no Sunday school.
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Martin hosted an open house from 7 to 10 Friday night at their northwest Andrews home. About 125 guests attended. A plastic clown centerpiece dressed for Christmas graced the green cloth table, with silver candelabra and green cathedral candles at each end. Mrs. J. A. Ulmer led coffee service while Mrs. Craddock Ulmer poured from a crystal punch bowl. Refreshments included barbecue, turkey, baked ham, hot rolly nuts, pies, pickles, and ale.
