Red Newsome of Hobbs New Mexico and Ray Clifton of La Mesa were killed Thursday afternoon at the Phillips Gasoline Plant yard in Fuller ton when a tractor boom touched a high voltage line. Both men died instantly despite medical aid and were taken to Singleton Funeral Home. Clifton left a wife and three children, Newsome a wife and one child. This marked the third fatal accident at Fuller ton in two days.
The First Baptist Church of Andrews will begin construction on a new church building with ground breaking on Sunday at 2 30 pm Invitations have been sent to former pastors and members. Rev O C Curtis of Perryton will preach at 11 00 am and Rev E J Cobb formerly of Andrews will speak at 7 30 pm The event aims to draw a large crowd as the contractor ready the grounds and Rev E Brand extends the invitation to the community.
The county court accepted five miles of county road and city street paving from Ted B. Smith Construction Company on the western edge near Winkler county. It rejected ten miles completed from Andrews city limits to the west. Judge Ramsey said payment and transfer would occur after the remaining ten miles meet specifications.
Two producing wells completed in the past week in Andrews County. Pacific Western Oil Company No. 2 E. P. Cowden in the Dollar Hide pool flowed 289.46 barrels of 41.2 gravity oil with gas oil ratio 1739 over a 7 601 786 ft interval, depth 8 665 ft after acid treatment. Shell Oil Company No. 1 EK Lineberry in the Nelson field flowed 421.31 barrels of 43 gravity oil with gas oil ratio 372 from Ellenburger intervals 10 275 to 10 410 ft after 4 000 gallons acid. Other wells include Ellenburger tests by Stanolind No. 1 E. C. Nix in central-west Andrews and a Grisham Hunter well plugged as a petroleum failure near Bedford. Sinclair Prairie Oil Company reports two rotary-drilled projects in Shafter Lake Devonian area.
The Singleton Funeral Home in Andrews plans a Sunday opening at 10 a.m. with staff introductions at 2:30 p.m. Dedication speeches by three local ministers and music by Helen Nichols will mark the event. Whatley operates the service, which includes ambulance use, burial insurance, embalming prep, vaults and caskets. The $10,000 chapel seats 100 and features refreshments and souvenirs.
A fatal wreck occurred on Eunice Road near Andrews seven teen miles west of the town. Leroy James Altum, 43, rode with A. J. Kelso in a red Ford pickup. Kelso survived but was in severe shock. Altum’s effects were listed for his widow, including two pencils and a billfold, as onlookers departed in the December chill.
Seminole stayed undefeated in the district by edging the Andrews Mustangs 28 to 18 in a late finish. Jack Young stood out at back with 8.5 yards per carry while Nixon and Corley anchored line play and Dearen wrecked the Seminole defense. Andrews gained 864 yards to Seminole’s 256 as Young nearly broke another score late in the fourth.
Mr and Mrs Thomas Elder Smith welcomed a baby girl named Myra Jane born last week at 2 Brownwood hospital The infant weighs seven pounds fourteen ounces Thomas Elder attends Howard Payne College in Brownwood Texas.
The junior class presents Phillip Barry's The Youngest with a double cast of eighteen. Dress rehearsals begin next week under director Miss Josephine Kelly. Cast includes T. D. Hamilton Neill Longley Betty Brannen Wanda Rentz and others with crews led by Jean Nelson Max Short Billy Bynum Charlotte Landon Nell Baker Virginia Robertson June Dyess Patty Jenkins.
The commissioners court will meet next week with McCarty Division Engineer State Highway Department Lubbock to survey Andrews county road problems and advise on roads eligible for 25 and 75 percent matching state funds. Dawson county sets road bond election for December 30. Andrews may call a road bond election to align with Dawson, aiding support.
The Andrews County hospital renovation, delayed briefly by material shortages, is set to resume soon. Superintendent Virgil Reed notes the project will finish quickly, with a larger waiting room, added office space, and redesigned interior including mauve and green color schemes and relocated labor and delivery areas.
The county commissioner's court votes to purchase 2000 Chinese elm trees for sale to residents at cost. Trees will beautify the city and premises. some to line highways, parks, hospital grounds, and lawns. Half are 2½ to 3 inches diameter, the rest 1 to 2 inches. Purchase announced by Judge Ramsey on Thursday.
Three accidents were reported Wednesday on the Eunice highway west of Andrews. A. H. Skinner of Eunice is treated at Andrews County Hospital after a noon crash. condition favorable. Leroy James Altum of Hobbs, N. M. died from injuries when his 40 Ford pickup overturned in the wreck driven by A. J. Kelso of Hobbs. Kelso was taken to Hobbs hospital with severe shock. A reporter from the Andrews County News, dispatched to cover the Kelso-Altum crash, overturns in the same car but sustains no injuries.
A top hat wearing stork in a nursery announces Out to Lunch as babies rest with mothers. Screen painting credited to Mrs. J. L. Mayhew. A new physician is expected to join the hospital staff soon and nursing staff additions are planned within a month.
Mrs Edgar Burkett, postmistress, departed Monday night to aid her sister who is ill in Farmersville.
The Andrews Lions Club unanimously voted to sponsor the Red Cross Chapter in Andrews county and to oversee reorganization and officer elections. I M Heath and A L Rhodes led the report and recommended officers including Russell Johnson as Executive Secretary and Lynn Miller as County Chairman with Miss Ann Seay serving as Treasurer. A fundraising drive was planned to support a functioning Red Cross and to ensure accountable use of donations.
The new Wacker Building beside the Post Office will be ready for occupancy January 1. Wallace Morris of Seagraves will be the manager and will relocate to Andrews, needing housing as announced by the company.
The Andrews area expects a busy 1948 with three production camps planned by Skelly Oil Gulf Oil and Phillips. Airport construction FHA housing a 20 room tourist court a new Masonic Lodge a potential picture show and new service stations are planned.
The District Court of Andrews County met Monday at 10 a m with Judge J C Olson presiding. The Grand Jury was in session briefly, no true bills returned, and District Attorney Starley noted Andrews County caused little trouble. The Petit Jury is to meet Tuesday at 10 a m, December 2, but was dismissed until December 16. several cases settled by agreement. Grand Jurors and Petit Jurors listed.
Light showers drenched Andrews County on Wednesday causing crop damage and treacherous travel. Two to three wrecks were reported with one dead and two injured, underscoring hazardous road conditions.
