The Mustang Club announces a barbecue to start the year at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Little League Park. Football players will be introduced by coaches. tickets are $1.50 and memberships $3. Ben Griffith urges everyone to support the Mustangs.
A benefit bingo to support the local Boys Club is set for Tuesday September 5 at the Moose Lodge at 8 p.m. If successful it will become a monthly event to aid the Boys Club.
James Craddock Andrews County clerk was named the newest member of the Ambassadors at a luncheon meeting held Thursday. He replaces Dr. R A Montgomery who moved to Abilene this week. The Ambassadors, a 25 man group, promote Andrews and represent the county at chamber events. Charlie Ward presided as 14 members attended.
Andrews schools will open at 8 45 a m Monday with a short opening day schedule. Full days start Tuesday and Labor Day is Sept 4. Enrollment is projected around 2867 with specific by school figures and a staff of 30 new teachers.
Big Red Mustang gridsters battle Denver City in a scrimmage with disputed scoring. Andrews, Finley, Bales, Par ish, Pitman and War ren star in a hard fought session as injuries sideline Watson and Taylor. A Friday 8 p.m. scrimmage against Permian is set in Mustang Stadium.
Andrews County Commission ers approve hiring a consulting geologist to trace minerals in the county. The county and the University of Texas land office in Midland will jointly fund the study with John Goldsmith of Albuquerque named as the consultant. County Judge Roy Bennett says the value of the study has been discussed for weeks.
The Ponytails from Andrews claim first place in a national competition in Oxford Mississippi on Friday. Several corps members also win top honors in individual events and Jan Bilhartz expresses overwhelming pride at the results.
The Andrews Posse placed second at the National Junior Rodeo Parade in Odessa this week. First went to the San Angelo posse with Stanton collecting the Junior Riding Club trophy. El Paso led senior groups. Attendees included F H McWilliams and other local residents.
County Clerk James Craddock announces marriage licenses rise to five dollars statewide starting Monday August 28, up from three dollars and twenty five cents. The note marks concurrent hikes in living and loving costs across Texas.
A 1959 car driven by Carol Ann Bagley and a motorcycle rider Tommy McNew collided at the Main and Broadway intersection at 9 20 p m Thursday. Passengers Steven Lowe and McNew were taken to the hospital for checks and no citations were issued.
Scotty Nieman of Andrews won the Tour nament of Champions with a 142 total, 72-70, three strokes ahead of Pat Campbell of Odessa. Scott Stagner of Odessa finished third, followed by Don Hartman San Angelo Ronny Brodrick Big Spring Terry Cook Odessa and Pat Windom McLean. In the 14-15 age group Alan Pursley Midland won with 145. Paul Burleson Sweetwater was second. R Dub Huckabee Monahans won the 12-13 bracket with 160, followed by Terry Sinclair San Angelo.
A practice siren startled the audience Thursday during the battle of the bands and a Friday alarm proved to be false.
Lois Pilgrim, cafeteria manager, says extra milk will cost four cents, up from two. All other prices remain the same for the coming year with meals at 30 cents per meal or 75 cents per week for first and second graders, 40 cents per meal or two dollars per week for third and fourth graders, and 45 cents per meal or 2.25 dollars per week for older students. Adults pay 2.75 dollars per week or 55 cents per meal.
The museum board will meet Monday at 7 30 p m in the county courtroom of the courthouse. All interested persons and board members are invited as the board plans to start a museum in the library building wing and urges attendance.
