Merchants and merchants’ association plan shifts for a school party at the Rose Theatre. All school-age children are to attend free shows Friday and Saturday with age groups 6 to 12 and 13 up, featuring a comedy and a movie respectively, amid disruption and delays.
The city council announced a downtown traffic crackdown beginning September 1. An officer will patrol by foot during the day and issue tickets for overtime parking in two hour zones, double parking, and failing to stop at crosswalks.
The Little Joe and Crowder Family will perform two nightly shows at the Andrews county fair on September 29 and 30 in the commune building. Jim Hergberger, fair association president, said the association will sponsor the appearance, with members meeting twice monthly to finalize Septem ber plans.
Andrews county voters approved three major county measures in a Saturday bond election. A 425000 financing bond for courthouse additions passed by a little over four to one, with 169 for and 37 against. Reallocation of taxes carried 176 for and 31 against. Separating the tax assessor and collector from the sheriff received 177 for and 30 against.
Pastor N. S. Daniel invites the public to a revival at Means Memorial Methodist Church starting Sunday and running through August 28 with Horace Brooks of Seminole as visiting evangelist. Daily services at 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. except Sundays when preaching starts at 11:00 a.m. Daniel also preaches at a session in Ackerly, Texas, with daily services there at 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Vic Luna a Latin American laborer on the First Baptist Church project suffered severe arm lacerations and a back injury when the scaffold he stood on collapsed last Thursday during construction work.
Summer rehearsals begin Tuesday August 23 at 8 30 a m for high school band members. Sessions last about two hours daily with new music and materials. New students from Andrews urged to report to the high school band hall alongside regular members. Prospects look good with about 110 already registered for the senior band.
Charles Brewer used a hot putter to defeat Ray Porter 76-77 and win the Andrews Country Club championship. Porter, 1952 club champ, beat E. P. Wright on the 20th hole to face Brewer. Jerry Dixon, 13, won four trophies in four events and took the Midland 12-13 division, with earlier wins in Iraan and state junior meet at Abilene.
Andrews City Council appoints a fifteen member Charter Commission including three attorneys. The panel will draft a Home Rule Charter, with first meeting set for next Friday at 8 p m in the chamber of commerce office. The charter process includes mailing copies to voters and a future election after charter completion.
Season tickets for the Andrews Mustangs home football games go on sale to the public Monday at 8 00 am. Last year ticket holders were offered priority until 5 pm yesterday. Remaining seats are sold on a first come first served basis with prices at $6.25. First home game is against Lakeview on September 23.
Andrews school officials announce 240 first graders pre-register here before September 1. Parents must bring birth certificates, vaccination records, and immunization details. Registration windows and building-specific reminders for new students follow, with complete opening schedule and holiday notes.
Calvary Baptist Church in northeast Andrews and Jones holds a revival led by Kenneth Coffee with Tom Flippin announcing daily services at 10:00 a.m. and evening services at 7:30 p.m. The revival runs through Sunday August 28 with re arrangements for schedules to be mailed to junior high students next Wednesday.
Stanolind Oil & Gas drilled two tests eight to nine thousand feet deep nine miles north of Andrews, yielding oil at 135 to 140 barrels per hour with gas and mud returns and no formation water. A second well further tested in the same Wolfcamp, plus a Permian interval test and Ellenburger wildcat location were announced by Delhi-Taylor and Samedan Oil in the Andrews County area.
Huey York a 26 year old Kinney Kinney Construction employee was admitted to M B Anderson Hospital Houston for examinations and treatment after a critical condition was noted at the Mast Clinic in Midland. Red Wright and L W Reynolds flew York and his wife to Houston early Thursday morning while their three children returned to Tyler with Huey York Sr their grandparents to stay during the parents stay.
Final disaster plans were presented by committees on food medical transportation shelter communications publicity and others at the last Andrews County Disaster Unit meeting. The permanent unit is now organized and ready should disaster strike. Two men were injured when a jack slipped while lifting a truck at the Lowe Drilling site southeast of Andrews. J. T. Bolin remained seriously injured and was moved from Permian General Hospital to an Odessa hospital. Jeff Chaffin, 27, received emergency bruises treatment and was released.
Band director Everett Maxwell reports that 30 Gunnison students at Western State College helped create the Symphonic Band. Walter Winters Carla Sue Horton Sue Maxwell among those named for positions. Horton leads first chair tenor sax, others earn high concert and low concert spots. The group, including Glenda Morrison, heads to Texas Saturday.
Cruse Realty announces a new 20 unit air conditioned motel for Andrews to be moved from Snyder starting tomorrow. Units will sit on property leased from W. W. Peoples, just south of the El Royale Hotel, with a cafeteria to be erected alongside the motel.
