Local coverage sketches Andrews public school plans and facilities with modern chairs and lavatories, plus community reaction. It notes a push for hydrogen powered energy projects and references regional figures and past legal cases that shade the town’s outlook on growth and governance.
Athletic director Glenn Frazier says a large invitational track meet is possible this year with a new eight lane red cinder track at Mustang Stadium. The oval ringed track features a 220 yard straight and a west side straightaway, allowing two class meet alignments and reduced injury risk due to even surface and easier maintenance.
Allen Maltsberger longtime Seagraves resident and father of Dixie Maltsberger of Andrews was resting well after being accidentally shot Monday. He and Dixie and his son Dean had returned from a rabbit hunt when the elder Maltsberger entered a bedroom to store a .22 rifle and the weapon discharged. The bullet traversed the left chest, grazed the heart, and lodged in a back muscle. Doctors have not removed it due to heart condition.
The School Advisory Council met Monday night to list study projects for the coming year. Projects include integration study with Citizens Research group, school maintenance, polio vaccination opinion survey, planning a new high school, academic standards, student marriages, new elementary physical education, and report cards for junior high. A committee led by James Roberts will refine goals and present them at the September meeting. The annual banquet will honor six outgoing members and their spouses.
E. M. Strickland Jr of Seminole, new State Welfare official for the region, will be in Andrews on the second Tuesday each month to process old age assistance and aid to the needy and blind. Office space is at the courthouse with hours 8 am to 5 pm, and he will make house calls.
The annual Quarterback club barbecue was moved from Sept 7 to Sept 6 due to a football scrimmage with Midland. The event will be at Community Park and invites all club members, prospective members, and their wives.
One person suffered minor injuries in two separate traffic crashes this week. Sam Gamage of Jamesa was taken to Permian General Hospital after a three vehicle collision at North Main and Ave D on Monday. A. J. Coe of Midland drove the first truck, Gamage the second, and Joseph Walker of Bartlesville, Oklahoma the third, which could not stop in time. The second crash occurred Tuesday at Northwest 6th and Ave where James Carroll Wright and Mrs. O E Price collided. Wright’s vehicle sustained $150 damage and Price $100, with Price cited for no driver’s license. A county crash on Kerim Highway involved Franklin Hill of Lovington, New Mexico driving a pickup that ran a stop sign and struck Fred Russell Mack of Odessa. the pickup was nearly demolished.
The Andrews County News captured three firsts in advertising composition, column writing, and general excellence at the West Texas Press Association contest in Lubbock. The paper also earned a second year sweep in advertising composition and saw editor James Roberts elected as one of three new WTPA directors.
Students in grades seven to nine who moved here over the summer and were not enrolled last spring should register at once. Principal Vernon Payne asks new pupils to come to the new junior high building during 9 to 12 a.m. and 2 to 5 p.m.
Registration opens at 8 am Friday for grades 1-6 across four city elementary schools. Zoning directs students to San Andres Central and Devonian schools, with immunization and birth certificates required, and assignments announced after registration.

The school board met Tuesday to plan final inspections of San Andres elementary and the administrative building and to discuss a treasurer proposal from Robert Barber. They granted limited contract extensions for Templeton-Cannon, Shifler Bros, and Southwestern Electric, and reviewed instructional program evaluations and a comprehensive policy draft developed over a year by faculty.
Temperatures cooled over the past week with a 24 hour high of 90 degrees on Monday and humidities easing. Showers helped lower heat stress while nighttime lows also fell, marking cooler conditions than early June readings near the Permian Basin Pipeline Station west of town.
The city council meeting Monday night was postponed due to the absence of WC Lyons and Otis Ogden. Thad Ballew is still on vacation. Hobbs group planned to present a subdivision plan. G Bert Smith and Robert Barber were to speak for ex Police Chief Prentis Jones.
