A local field report recalls a Thursday rabbit hunt near Castro with nine rabbits killed by James Reed and a rival boast by Kenneth Jackson. Hunters enjoyed neon barbecue by Gene Irwin and associates and favored a future hunt on a Saturday for older high school students.
A pre registration school program in San Andres focused on kindness to animals. During a class activity, Willy admitted he once kicked the neighbor's dog after kicking the boy next door, revealing a troubling incident while recounting personal experience.
Local business leaders and railroad experts favor a new shortline through Andrews and Seminole, contingent on ICC permit approval. The plan includes interim financing, data presentation to the ICC, and public stock financing in four cities to fund construction and launch rail service in the Permian Basin. Time and the ICC will determine success.
Friday's event hosted 270 children who will begin school next fall. Lowell McGee lists neighborhood counts: Glorieta 66, Underwood 55, Devonian 83, San Andres 66.
The Andrews Chamber of Commerce forms a convention committee led by Frank Hyde to attract conventions and meetings. The group arranged free registration for the South Plains and Eastern New Mexico Peace Officers Association event and provided four door prizes for over 100 attendees.
A 13 year old Hobbs boy stole five cars across Eunice and Kermit, wrecked three, and fled into Andrews authorities before being captured by Sheriff Paul Cumbie. He had driven through a road block and sleepily hid in cement bags until morning pursuit.
Andrews communications agencies joined Operation Alert 1961 a nationwide Civil Defense drill led locally by Sheriff Paul Cumbie. Most activities were quiet with radio silence 3 30 to 4 p m as water power and oil field coverage were assigned. Local operators led by H C Miles and Harold Wilson relayed messages aiding auxiliary communications during the drill.
The 12th Andrews Junior Rodeo runs May 11-13 at a new arena two miles north of town. Sponsored by the Andrews County Rodeo Association, the event draws top young talent from a large area with 8 p.m. performances nightly. Stock producer Alvin Koonsman of Snyder. Admission is 1.00 for adults and 0.50 for children. A Polaroid Land Camera will be awarded by raffle on closing night. Entry blanks available from O. D. Huckabee at Fashion Shoppe.
Phillips Petroleum completes No 2 C Q Texas University block 13 Wolfcamp in Andrews County with 264.16 bbls oil daily, 1800 CGR, depth 8800 ft and 8721 ft casing. Humble to deepen No 1 J E Parker in Martin field to 8200 ft for Fusselman tests. Great Western to drill No 1 H O Sims four thousand five hundred ft wildcat near Eunice New Mexico. Ralph Lowe to re enter No 3 A Deep Rock and plug back to 11500 ft for Pennsylvanian tests in Andrews County.
Williams and Mrs. A G Howard, a Modern Foods meat market manager and Singleton's clerk, were chosen as Andrews Friendliest and Most Courteous workers after counting over 3000 ballots. The two longtime residents receive $50 savings bonds and framed certificates, with presentation at a future public meeting.
Injuries to three members of the mile relay team forced Andrews to withdraw from the mile relay at the Red Raider Relays in Lubbock. Ted Nelson Darvis Cormier and Leslie Blackburn nursed minor leg and foot injuries by week’s end. Robert Sandlin and Gary Overcash competed in field events, and four individuals plus the mile relay team planned to enter the state meet in Austin Friday and Saturday.
The American and National Little League groups announce tryouts starting Monday May 8 to fill two new teams each. Forms available at schools. boys aged nine before Aug 1 1960 and under 13 before Aug 1 1961 eligible. First games set for May 22.
The February term of the 109th District Court concluded with nonjury judgments. District Judge G. C. Olsen will return for two one day sessions in May to handle two civil matters. The next term is set to begin July 10.
