The 72 year old publisher of the Andrews County News C W Roberts Sr was hospitalized in Permian General Hospital for 12 days with an apparent heart seizure. His physician called his condition the same late Saturday afternoon.
Absentee voting swells as Saturday primaries loom with 118 total absentee votes counted for the Democratic and Republican contests. County officials urge last day to vote by Tuesday for those at the State Meet or out of town, and remind movers to register for the new precinct roll.
Absentee voting for a May 19 special election on a free public kindergarten begins Tuesday in the county clerk's office. Balloting continues through May 15 per school business manager M. O. Woolam after petitions certified sufficient names. The ballot asks voters to approve or oppose a free kindergarten.
Mrs. Mattie Jane Mathews a 40 year resident of Andrews died at Permian General Hospital about 1 15 p m Saturday after a long illness She fell at her home 300 N E Ave breaking her hip Saturday morning Funeral services are pending at Singleton Funeral Home.
The Andrews Telephone Company received a telegram from Congressman George Mahon confirming a Rural Electrification Administration loan of 2 024 000 dollars. Funds will expand facilities at Florey Frankel City and Andrews to extend line coverage over ten years, marking the largest REA loan for a single independent exchange in Texas.
Applications by senior high students must be filed by Thursday with principal J. Lee Smith. The seven week program runs June 4 to July 20 offering two 1 unit courses at 70 hours each, with classes 7:50 to 9:30 and 9:45 to 11:45 a m Monday to Friday.
The Andrews Mustangs defeated Pecos 5 to 4 in extra innings at Pecos in a conference game highlighted by three Mustangs home runs. Larry Thorne, Tommy Camacho, and Jack Hines provided the big hits as Camacho started on the mound before relief by Mike Compton who earned the win.
The Andrews Mustang Club called a meeting for 7 30 p m Monday in the junior high cafeteria. President Fred Courtney said the group formerly the Quarterback Club will discuss local support for high school entrants in the state meet next week and other plans for the year.
William Ee Burford, vice president of the Commercial State Bank, has resigned to become president of Sheppard State Bank in Wichita Falls. The resignation is effective May 25, and Burford and his family reside at 1008 N. W. 12th Pl since arriving from Dallas on April 28, 1961 to replace R. J. Ream.
Today features a 1:30 PM dedication ceremony in the dome of the new high school with Dr J R Smiley UT president as speaker. Officials from three agencies will be recognized and the day includes an open house for the $5 million complex housing the high school city administration building and Permian General Hospital.
Charles W. Ward, plant supervisor for Pan American Petroleum in the Andrews area, retires after more than 15 years with Pan American and over 40 years in the oil industry. He began in 1920 with Gulf Refining at Tulsa and worked for Carter Oil, Royalite in Canada, Tropical Oil in Colombia, L.A., before joining Pan Am in 1947 for Hastings plant construction and startup operations.
