The weekly revival of the old fashioned rabbit hunt is set for this morning east of town with gatherings at the east county barn at 6.45 and nearby at the McCarley settlement.参加 hunters welcome for a day of walking shooting and hearty eating reflecting a bygone county pastime.
Workers and backers report a surge of interest at Pony League tryouts with 85 hopeful players for 25 returning youths. Officials fear not all youths will participate even if two more teams form, while sponsors are scarce. Bill Rowlett solicits sponsors, co-sponsors, or volunteers to sustain the program.
The Secretary of Labor Arthur J. Goldberg argues the Mexican farm labor agreement should die unless protection for American workers is added. A U S treaty brings about a million Mexican workers yearly. the pact expires December 31 without extension. He cites adverse effects on U S farm workers wages and conditions, prompting a debate over cotton pickers and East coast welfare portrayals.
Andrews wins regional trophy as four first places lead to state qualification in Austin May 5 6. Clay Keen Joe McKissick Tommie King Mariglyn Frazier Norman Rogers Susan Lanner Plus track and tennis standouts advance with eight regional qualifiers highlighted by Ted Nelsons record 46.5 in the 440 and Sandlin 54 10 in the shot put. Vic Thomas and George Averyt advance in doubles after hard regional rounds.
About 100 law enforcement officers from the Texas South Plains and Eastern New Mexico Peace Officers Association converge on the Andrews Community Building for the spring meeting. Hosts Police Chief Clinton Dame and Sheriff Paul Cumbie welcome attendees as Captain Joe Roach calls the session to order. Virgil Lasater discusses juvenile crime. local attorney Max Ramsey speaks on officers appearance and tests after lunch.
Prestate events see coach Max Goldsmith taking field qualifiers and the mile relay squad to Lubbock for the Red Raider Relays. Gary Overcash tops regional high jump, Rob ert Sandlin competes in shot put and discus. Mile relay group includes Joe McKissick Darvis Cormier Leslie Blackburn and Ted Nelson.
Today is the final day to vote in Andrews friendly worker contest with ballots due before midnight. Winners receive a US Savings Bond and a framed plaque to be presented at a public meeting. ballots are in this issue and must be mailed or delivered to local banks or the News Office.
R G Farrell Construction Co of Odessa won the bid to construct Andrews city hall after submitting the lowest proposal. Base price 129100 with four of eight alternates accepted bringing total to 132710. City budget 170000 and project start planned within 10 days with 180 working days estimated.
C V Campbell Pan American superintendent was elected president of the Downtown Lions Club at a noon luncheon. He succeeds Brodie Hutchinson and will take office this summer. W J Sanders first vice president, Chris Clark second, Frank Hyde third. Jim Burcham becomes permanent secretary treasurer. First year directors are Roy Buckner and Joe Wirshing. second year directors Bryan Baker and La Doyce Lambert. Owen Dodger Lion Tamer and Gerald Kempe song leader. Tailtwister run-off between O D Huckabee and Doc Grevelle.
Registration runs through Friday for the Andrews Jaycee Golf Tournament at the local country club. Open to boys under 18 by Aug 1, 1961 with no entry fee for 18 holes medal play. Entries to Country Club Pro S A Smith by Friday. Top four local golfers advance to the regional tournament on May 13.
Citizens and trailer court owners challenged a $2.50 water minimum per unit at a city council meeting. They argued it boosts rents and prompts families to leave, proposing instead a $2.50 minimum per water meter. The council will study the issue. A second demand urged enforcing a leash dog ordinance already on the books.
Lindsey presented a letter from Postmaster Harold Roberts noting a carrier is bitten about once a week. Roberts states dog bites are a growing issue causing medical bills and clothing damage as Mayor Carruth and the council promise to study remedies.
William E. Burford, 28, of Dallas, elected vice president of the Commercial State Bank to succeed R. J. Ream who joined a Big Spring bank. Burford, a Lubbock native, comes from First Citizens Bank in Dallas where he was a vice president after three years at Republic National Bank.
Financiers view rising deposits as evidence of improving business. First National Bank reported 8 083 611.19 and Commercial State 5 358 426.72 on April 12, with Commercial State contributing most to the gain of over 1.5 million from Q1 1960.
Friday will be a holiday for first graders while rising six year olds may attend a two hour session from 9 to 11 a.m. at the nearest elementary school. Parents will receive orientation from the principal. No lunch will be served.
Hunters meet at the county barn on East Broadway at 6 45 a m. trucks depart at 7 a m for the drop site with later drives available along East Broadway to the blacktop road near the Y. No tickets needed to hunt but a noon meal offered. a drawing for a Stevens 410 shotgun accompanies the meal at Joe Allbright's place. Minors require adult accompaniment.
