County Employees Honored At Andrews Recognition Dinner

Minor wrecks reported in Andrews with three collisions
Police logged three minor wrecks in Andrews on Wednesday and Thursday. A 1974 Grand Safari parked at 605 North Main was hit in a hit and run causing about 75 dollars in damage. A 1974 Chevrolet driven by Ricky Alaniz and a 1975 Chevrolet driven by Pat Wright collided at North Main and NE Avenue F. Wright’s car sustained about 500 dollars damage and Alaniz about 300. A 1973 Ford driven by John Wilson and a 1972 Ford driven by Matias Rivas collided in the Sears parking lot as Wilson backed out.

Man falls from top in Amoco tank battery explosion
A 28 year old Odessa man David McKinney was injured when a chemical foam treated Amoco tank battery exploded three miles south of Odessa. He fell from the top while spraying foam, suffering burns and a broken wrist. He was taken to Permian General Hospital and later to Odessa Medical Center for further treatment. Firefighters contained the blaze in about ten minutes with no other injuries reported.

Tompkins Throws No-Hitter as Mustangs Edge Indians 1-0
Jimmy Tompkins pitched a 1-0 win over the Seminole Indians for the Mustangss' 9-8 season mark and 2-1 in District 2-3A. He struck out 18 batters, walked four, and after a 12 batter no-hit stretch finally walked in the seventh. Joe Dan Barnes reached on a hit by pitch, stole second, and Lee scored the winning run in the sixth.

Brinkley’s Cord Phaeton Wins People’s Choice Trophy
An Andrews man, R. L. Brinkley, saw his 1937 Cord Phaeton win the People’s Choice trophy at the West Texas Street Association 4th annual Automobile Show in Odessa. The car also won Istinit’s class with 98 points at the National Competition in San Antonio last July. Over 100 cars displayed at the Ector County Coliseum with more than 3,000 spectators voting for the most desirable auto. Brinkley’s Cord captured 1st in the Classic Special-Interest Class.
