Reverend Roy Clayton, newly called pastor of the Andrews Baptist Church, will deliver his first sermon Sunday at 11 AM. He was unanimously selected last Sunday and hails from Waco as a Baylor University senior student. Clayton grew up in Roscoe, attended Roscoe Public Schools, and is a Wayland Baptist College graduate. He previously pastored Luders Baptist Church for two years, is married with a two year old son, and will move his family to Andrews within a fortnight.
Harrison s Texans will furnish the music for the Company dance at Humble Camp Recreation hall Friday night April 22. A large crowd of visitors and locals is expected to attend this event.
Mrs. Ruth Evlyn Vaden was honored Tuesday afternoon with a bridal shower at the home of Mrs. John Underwood. Guests included Mary Ruth Roberts and Gail Baxter as hosts, with gifts and refreshments of lemonade and cookies for many friends.
Austin reports hearings on the railroad commission May order ended with officials saying field representatives whose April reductions were later restored need not fear further losses. No additional data is required and the May order should be issued within about ten days after the commission studies the submitted information.
Carmen Snipes and Dalton Echols will participate in the Bi-District meet at Alpine Friday and Saturday. They will be accompanied by Juanita Kelly and Nat Hynds. Snipes won 2nd in the short hand contest in Midland last weekend and Echols 2nd in the half mile run.
Mrs. Dale Morrison presented Royal Regiment before a large audience Thursday night. The High School band supplied music for the occasion and a social hour with punch and cake followed the review.
The Wasson Soft Ballers meet Humble Camp’s stalwarts in the season opener at the local diamond. Camp ladies anticipate launching a Soft Ball organization soon. A mixed team may be organized in Andrews. Mr and Mrs Carol Pipes and Mr and Mrs Dennis Nix were shopping in Spring Monday.
In June in Washington Queen Elizabeth II and Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt will wear summer weight wool dresses. The Queen’s dress is a gift from American wool growers and Mrs Roosevelt’s from British Empire growers. Virgin wool from 34 states provides material for the Queen Mary delivery to Buckingham Palace.
A group of ladies from Andrews and Humble Camp attended a bridge party in Seminole this week. Attendees from Andrews and the Camp included Mesdames J. B. Lewis B. P. Guyton B. R. Pitman Virgil Reed H. W. Black R. R. McCarty and Frank Fee.
The State Highway Department and the U S Bureau of Public Roads completed a survey of hazards on 20000 miles of state highways revealing 42863 danger spots. Excessive curves total 9553 and excessive grades 3303 with numerous intersections lacking clear sight lines.
The Andrews County Commissioners Court orders an election on May 6 1939 to decide whether the Court House site should be moved to a place in or near the business section of Andrews. Ballot options are removal or retention with instructions for marking. Public notice to be published twice in a county newspaper at least 14 days before election.
On April 20 1939 the Andrews County Commissioners Court met in regular session at the courthouse in Andrews Texas with all five county officials present and passed an order concerning a bond election.
Twenty members of the Andrews Baptist Church attended the workers conference of the Lamesa Association at Seminole on Thursday. It drew one of the largest crowds for a similar meeting with lunch served at the Masonic building. Attendees included Rev. Roy Clayton and numerous church members.
The Big Andrews County Rabbit Drive is scheduled for next Wednesday April 26 with a noon steak fry at Jim Fowlers home to recruit local farmers to clear rabbits. A pickup truck will leave Cocanoughers Cafe at 8 AM to transport volunteers, ammo is sold on the truck, and the drive begins at the old Faskins place on the Midland Andrews highway by 8 30. H Rentz Hiram West Edgar Rukk et will lead the steak fry with Al McCarley as chief cook Jim Fowler and John Keith assistants. Ladies asked to bring pies cakes and salads. Captains of squads chosen at the meeting point.
The Andrews High School Senior Class will present the comedy That Watkins Girl on Friday May 5 in the High School Auditorium. Fern Pond leads as That Watkins Girl with cast members H M Smith Orville Jones Carmen Snipes Billie D Craddock and others in a mountaineer themed three act play set in the eastern country.
