Farmers across Gaines and Dawson counties prepare May planting as debates over weather and politics heat up. Voters await a city runoff result while candidates gear up for a May 1st primary and upcoming state races.
Thunderstorms produced near darkness but little rain in parts of Andrews County. Official airport gauge recorded 2.8 inches for Sunday through Thursday, with daily totals of 0.3, 1.0, 1.38, and 0.26 inches respectively. Unofficial northwest gauges ranged three to four and a half inches for the week. Strong winds Friday dried puddles, the city lake filled, and rain for the year reached about 3 inches, one inch above the 11 year first four month average.
The Mus tang Club hosts the annual All Sports Banquet Monday at the Civic Center with guest speaker Steve Sloan Texas Tech football coach. Athletic Director Tommy Watkins will introduce players and coaches as James Roberts serves as master of ceremonies. Sloan, 31, led Tech to a 6-5 season and set a Tech total offense record. He and his Alabama roots are noted along with family ties. Bubba Hoermann heads Mustang Club with Charles Russell as incoming president.
A run-off election for Place Five on the Andrews city council is set for Tuesday between Josie Rose and Duane Fitts after none of the three candidates in the April vote cleared 50 percent. Fitts had 437 votes to Roses 425, with incumbent Bill Gordon at 346. 1 2380 total votes cast.
The spring Strings in Concert features three school groups from high, middle, and sixth grade in the Middle School Cafeteria. Admission is by donation with proceeds to the moral fund. Carolyn Muzny and Jeanette Kolb perform Box Gavotte Ballet and a fiddle western tune set.
Funeral services for James Wesley Carr 53 will be at 2 30 p m Sunday at the Chapel of the Chimes Singleton Funeral Home. Carr died of a heart seizure at his McKinney Acres home. He was born July 19 1929 in Clovis New Mexico and is survived by his wife Glenna Marie one son James Allen two daughters Leslie Gail and Donna Marie.
Eighteen Andrews High School students and about many others from West Texas will compete at Odessa College for Region I UIL regional meet hosting AA and AAA schools. Local participants include Norma Boles Scott Ellison Kevin Jackson Jay Nabors and others as district winners move to state level. The event is directed by Odessa College official Dr Lee Quiece with Norman Hall George Cullener Garland Rattan and B F Conger among the regional executive committee.
The Perian General Hospital board discussed ongoing laundry problems and considered new options besides current Brownfield service. They approved ground lighting upgrades, reviewed security staffing, paid monthly bills, and funded a portable defibrillator and blood gas machine repairs. Reverend B B Six presided. attendees included Bill Ogden and others.
At a noon Rotary Club meeting, with the high school Interact Club, plans were finalized for a weekend trip to Boquillas across the Rio Grande. Volunteers will deliver basic medical supplies and clothing to residents. Doug Schoenewolf spoke on the free enterprise system.
