The Andrews Rotary Club scheduled the annual book sale to coincide with the downtown garage sale in late May. The club sells books of all types with owners donating and setting the purchase price. Rotary keeps 10 percent and the rest goes to the owner. People may leave books at the Chamber of Commerce office this month.
Edd Farmer, a mathematics instructor and coach for four years, accepted Thursday morning the post of assistant business manager at Andrews Schools. He has ten years of teaching experience and holds a bachelor's and master's in mathematics plus an administrative education certificate. He aims to blend academics with the business side of education.
The 109th District Court trial of B. W. Baucum versus Buford Chesney and the Shirley Chesney estate ended around 1 30 a m Saturday after five hours of deliberation. The jury found negligence on all sides in the Main and Broadway accident that killed Shirley Chesney. The plaintiff was awarded about 2000 dollars in damages but the verdict negates it.
Three local financial institutions Commercial State Bank First National Bank and Andrews Savings and Loan will observe an official bank holiday next Friday April 2 in observance of San Jacinto Day.
Andrews city council votes against moving the American Legion building into southwest Andrews. Officials sworn in two re elected councilmen Byford Sealy and Doug Gilliland. The meeting adopted four summer help positions, studied weatherproof garbage containers, and approved a Jaycee street closure for a April 24 29 carnival. New zoning board appointments were approved.
Region science fair sweepstakes winners Jeri Clements and Charlene Graham face moving challenges. Clements must transport a 400 pound hydroponics setup with an air temperature sensitive pump while Charlene’s tall math project is disassembled for the trip. Williamson coordinates the journey with a station wagon and a rescue light plant to power the load.
L. J. Copeland was hospitalized Wednesday after flipping from the top of a tank while working near Frankel City. He was receiving additional x rays to check for possible internal injuries. Scene witnesses said he slipped while pulling the ball plug and fell to the ground.
Robert E. LeMonds of Midland died on arrival at a Midland hospital late Thursday. Justice of the Peace John Biggs ordered an inquest verdict pending results of an auto accident. He was married to former Grace McWhorter of Andrews and worked as an accountant for Tri-Service Drilling Co. He had lived in Midland 16 years, was SMU graduate, Elk, American Legion, Texas State Guard member, World War II veteran, and owned drag racing cars. Memorials to Crippled Children’s Hospital in Ottine. Survived by widow, son Bill Leemonds, daughter Mrs. Bill Crow, and a granddaughter.
Thirty six track teams from Abilene High Odessa Permian Big Spring Midland Lee and others competed in the tenth annual Mustang Relays at Andrews. Finals were under lights with numerous old records noted including Andrews 440 relay 41.9 seconds and several state marks across multiple events.
Weather in Andrews County featured showers hail sun and varying temperatures from 44 to 88 degrees. Winds gusted up to 50 mph with a highline blown down at Midland Farms plant and resumed by morning. Northern Natural thermometer shows multiple days with 80s and 60s and a midweek drop to the forties.
The annual spring concert by the high school choirs will be in the old auditorium on Tuesday April 18 at 730 p.m. The program features A cappella mixed freshman and girls choirs with UIL contest selections. Admission is 1 for adults and 50 cents for children.
