James Roberts reports the Andrews city council arrival amid fire trucks and alerts at Austin Municipal Airport. He notes veteran lawmakers and a swelling 750 million budget surplus forecast, with calls for drastic tax reform and funding demands from colleges and schools during the legislative session.
Andrews High School won its 14th straight District 9 3A UIL Literary Contest presented by Kermit High School. Dozens of students earned first through third place across multiple events, totaling 183 points to lead Pecos and Kermit in the district.
A large Andrews meeting drew oil company representatives from Houston and across Texas as they questioned AISD's role in oil value assessments. They pressed for clarity on proposed 30 percent oil value increases by Pritchard and Abbott of Ft. Worth, and whether the board plans future raises. The AISD board stated no raise was requested and sought only to observe one assessment with the appraisal firm.
At a Monday night hearing in Austin the Andrews city council with Lubbock and Midland officials opposed a proposed statewide utility regulation commission. Mayor Louis Miller and Midland Mayor Ernest Angelo spoke along with Councilwoman Carolyn Jordan of Lubbock. Miller cited seven Andrews utility cases over three years involving gas, telephone, and electric services and a cable TV franchise, arguing local needs and finances guided decisions. Richard Edgell of 1405 NW 8th Place was announced as one of about 1,000 high school students to win a $1,600 four year Merit Scholarship funded by corporate sponsors. The national program is run by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in Evanston Illinois. Edgell plans pre law study and holds multiple honors including Eagle Scout and UIL debate first place in Kermit.
The Home course field aided the linksters as they posted a 303 team total to top Fort Stockton by eight strokes for the 14th district 2 3A golf title in 17 years. Andrews and the Panthers advance to the April 24 25 regional at the county country club with totals of 1262 and 1270 respectively.
In Andrews voters re elected school board president Billy D Cox by eight votes over Conrad Turner 267 259. Doctor Brian E Gordon was unopposed in Place 7 with 454 votes while Tommy D Williams finished third in Place 6 with 41 votes. Absentees totaled about 30 with election officials noting polls opened at 7 a m and closed at 7 p m. Cox 32 year resident and Continental Telephone district facilities manager seeks to continue improving education while Gordon a surgeon at Permian General Hospital aims to broaden the educational base for 1995.
Career Day at Andrews High School opens today at 9 AM in the home area. Counselor Mona Tinsley says the program offers students insight into career fields through lectures by professional speakers. College reps and local professionals will cover topics and take questions in 50 minute sessions.
The Permian General Hospital Board met Tuesday night at the hospital board room for its regular monthly meeting. They planned to discuss paying bills building program health club hours Texas Hospital Association Convention and the clinic rental.
