Campaign manager Roger Claney reports ongoing subscription push for the Andrews County News. Mrs. O A Nix wins a $25 prize for bringing in the most new subscriptions between Tuesday and Friday night. The drive aims to visit every home and boost circulation ahead of April 21. Readers are urged to subscribe or extend during candidate calls.
Pro rating of votes as of Monday April 7 shows Mrs. W. D. Echols top Andrews tally with 34 300, closely followed by Mrs. R. O. Davidson at 34 200. Other candidates include Mrs. J. D. Smith 4 100, Mrs. O. A. Nix 31 300, and Mrs. Helen Rigdon 31 200.
The Andrews School Board appointed Rudy Haile, former Lockney head coach, as assistant football coach to replace Don Williams. Haile will join April 25 and also teach social studies. He led Lockney to a bi district title in 1957 and has eight years of coaching experience including Navy service.
In the Andrews Independent School District election on Saturday Pike and Shepherd won seats on the board amid a five-candidate field. Pike led with 315 votes and Shepherd had 262 as 430 votes were cast county wide, with McCraw taking 67, Day 125, and Bruce 87.
An Andrews group filed an application for a Savings and Loan Association charter with the Texas state banking commissioner in Austin on Monday. The group, led by C. E. Carruth and WC Young, projects 150000 in capital and 37500 in surplus all deposited in escrow. Proposed officers include C. E. Carruth as president and treasurer with Robert Barber as secretary among a nine member board.
Officials from Texas and New Mexico faced objections to the reciprocity vehicle registration pact at a joint session in the chamber. Local contractors argued the agreement favors New Mexico by forcing Texas contractors to register, while out of state firms can operate without. W.R. Weddell and Major Wilson E. Speir outlined background and concerns, with action to continue discussion back on page.
California architect John Lynn Reid will display generalized sketches of a proposed Andrews High School this Saturday from 9 am to noon in the school administration building. The event follows three months of Saturday discussions with officials teachers and citizens. lunch will be served at noon.
Wesley Roberts of the 99th district announces his candidacy for a second term representing Andrews Dawson Gaines and Lynn counties. He cites progress in water data funding highway patrols old age aid mental health and parole reforms while noting further work remains. Roberts chairs a narcotic study and hints at ongoing efforts.
