A columnist denounces outcry over jokes about minorities and the trend to avoid offensive speech. The piece criticizes calls to capitalize the word Negro and defends public school prayer while urging allegiance to traditional national ideals.
Science and literary winners outshine sports as Linda Hayes led the Regional Science Fair in Odessa with the top project and Andrews High School captured the District 2-AAA literary title in Pecos. The district meet crowned multiple firsts across debate, extemporaneous speaking, number sense, slide rule, and biology divisions, with 39 Andrews students contributing to the team title.
The Mustang golf team won the district title by 36 strokes on their course with a team total 969 led by Pusey 76 and Brown 77. Kermit finished second at 1001, Monahans third 1009, Pecos 1035, Seminole 1255. Pusey narrowly lost medalist to Kermit’s Jimmy Clayton 227 to 228. Porter was third medalist with 234. Regional play set for Odessa CC Thursday and Friday.
A strong March salvages a weak first quarter in local building activity with permits totaling $164,350. Combined with January and February, Q1 1962 reaches $325,360, aided by eight new homes totaling $110,850 and a $35,000 Wesley Methodist Church permit. Additional commercial, garage, move, and residential permits are noted for specific addresses and contractors.
A 109th District Grand Jury returned nine indictments after a two day session. Murder charges were filed against J L Bowers for fatally shooting James David Frazier in February. Other indictments include theft, forgery, and swindling with worthless checks against Richard Ramond Wright Jerry Roberson Wilbert Templeton Jack Baker Wiley J Bullock W W Tubbs and Charles Peak. Mrs Gertrude Kinney was not indicted after questioning over the shooting of her husband.
A week of rain ends with a broad county-wide soaking as gauges report 0.7 to 0.8 inch from Friday’s downpours. The storm adds to Wednesday’s inch-plus rainfall, bringing the weekly total to about two inches after eight dry months.
Large withdrawals of public funds led to a drop in deposits at local banks. Total deposits were 10 639 305 73 with First National at 6 224 497 28 and Commercial State at 4 414 846 45. Loans rose slightly year over year with Commercial at 2 090 151 58 and First National around 2 257 830 01.
Don Yarborough Democratic gubernatorial candidate will open his campaign headquarters in Andrews Monday morning. Campaign manager Dan Sullivan says Yarborough will meet supporters at a coffee at TJ Ranch House from 7 30 to 9 a m. A public coffee event invites attendees to meet Yarborough before a motorcade to Seminole Lamesa Brownfield Levelland and Lubbock.
Voters turned out in heavy numbers to oust two incumbents and elect Ellison Tom Jr Jimmy Wilkins and Wayne Parker to the Andrews school board. Tom led with 755 votes, Wilkins 623 and Parker 446 in a field of 12 candidates.
Dr. Joe R. Smiley president of the University of Texas will speak at 1 30 p m Sunday April 29 during a joint open house and dedication of three new buildings totaling 5 million dollars. The event held under the dome of the new high school will recognize special guests from city hall the high school and the hospital.
Johnny Mack Adams seventh grader and son of Mr and Mrs John R Adams failed in the first round at the Regional Spelling Bee in Lubbock. He misunderstood the pronouncer and spelled agriculture instead of agricultural.
Postmaster Bob Luck reports Andrews Post Office receipts for the first quarter of 1962 reached $21,681, up $635 from the same period in 1961. The 1961 first quarter total was $21,046.
