James Roberts notes growing costs of living in Washington from restaurant meals to hotel rates and a congressman’s salary. He recalls seeing William Manchester's Death of a President in Dallas where no copies had sold yet, highlighting inflation’s uneven reach.
Feller argues America offers equal opportunity and the Permian Basin needs a four year college. He criticizes oil industry lobbies in Austin and backs a state supported regional college, preferably north of Highway 80, not Odessa or south of Interstate 20. The piece predicts a long battle but says the project is worth pursuing.
Andrews motorists will be offered black and gold car tags bearing the message We Like Andrews You Will Too. The Andrews County chamber of commerce board approved the tags after civic committee selection.
Andrews travels to Seminole for the 2AAA district track meet with Seminole as hosts. Ector is the preseason team favorite while defending champions are Monahans and Andrews held the title for 12 years before last season. Read page 6 for complete entries and event details.
The Andrews High School golf team moved back to the front with a 318 team score in Pecos, lifting their district total to 1277. Matahans slipped to second with 334 for 1292 as Monahans had been preseason favorites. District finals are in Monahans this weekend.
Dan Sullivan won the contested school board seat on Saturday while Doug Gilliland secured the city council post on Tuesday. Gilliland won 18S-140 over Hugh Chumley, Byford Sealy led council votes with 321 of 330. School race saw 1044 total votes with Lloyd Morgan uncontested at 987. Sullivan beat incumbent John Parish 513 to ? 268 for Brannar. Official canvassing at next council and school board meetings.
The Andrews tennis teams dominated the district meet tallying 50 points to Seminole 25 Fort Stockton 15 and Monahans 10. Andrews advances two senior doubles teams Johnny Black and Les Burns Debbie Hutcheson and Judy Reaching the finals in girls singles Candy Hutcheson and Don Turpen led wins with several doubles titles and junior champions Wayne Harrison Danny Smith Carol Brenholtz Vicki Benson.
Kenneth Sutton was unanimously elected president at a reorganization meeting of the Andrews Local Charities. New officers include Mrs. F W Noble as treasurer and Mrs. Mary Linne as secretary. The group formed about six or seven years ago under the United Fund of Andrews to serve Andrews County with volunteer aid.
Andrews County awarded a contract to T. W. Hooper and Forrest Lumber Company for an administration building at the airport. Contract price is 29312 dollars and construction will start soon. The commission approved the plan last month and authorized five April meetings for agents. A split vote approved Cal Western Life hospital insurance for county employees starting May 1.
James Roberts president of the proposed Permian Basin Railroad and Odessa counsel Brooks Harman outlined immediate plans to update economic freight data after an ICC certificate delay. They return from Washington discussions with rail and underwriting officials and will use volunteers in Sea Graves Seminole Andrews and Odessa to collect current freight information for an 78 mile shortline. The financing program will follow after the updated projections and study work with the engineering firm and underwriters.
The office of Floyd Peacock, tax collector and assessor reports 5208 license tags sold in Andrews County, including 3906 car tags and 1302 truck tags. The figure is similar to last year’s countywide sales.
Pete White, local Boys Club director, was elected rail twister of the Downtown Lions Club at a noon luncheon. Candidates included Jerry McPherin and Neil Laminack, with campaigns by Martin Epps and Charlie Alcorn.
