A county spelling bee final brings nerves to Lions Club members and spellers as finals hinge on tiny mistakes. The piece urges voters to study 15 local candidates for school board and city council, stressing unpaid posts require time, deliberation, and public service over pay.
A Moscow based Russian publication asked for sample copies of the Andrews County News. The reply notes two reasons for withholding: readers should pay their own way and the paper has not recently expressed strong anti Communist views against Russia and Cuba.

The fifth annual spring conference of the Moose Association will begin Friday in Andrews with over 250 Moose including state and national officers. Harry Howard of Moosthelirt will lead the delegation and conduct ritual competition and a Saturday ritual school. Arnold Sellars of Hutchinson will judge the ritual events. State President Hugh Brinkley will chair a Friday board meeting. The Baytown Championship Degree staff and Amarillo official Hamilton Murphy will attend. Frank Wood leads the local lodge preparations as the three day event ends Sunday afternoon.
An amateur thief took 42 dollars in bills from the Post Office Barber Shop cash register around 3 am Monday. The latch to the supply room door and the back door were pried and ajar, lights were on, while 160 dollars in bills and 57 in checks remained. Tommy Mims found the door ajar at 3 30 am but nothing missing. The robbery was investigated by the local sheriff's department.
Carolyn Pree 14 daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenneth W Price won the Andrews County spelling championship at a Downtown Lions Club noon meeting. Runner up Alice Terry 13 of Frankel City misspelled assiduously after ties. Finalists listed with eliminations and judge Mrs Brodie Hutchinson.
George Bush a 39 year old Houston oilman and Yale graduate met local Republicans in the Green Room of the First National Bank Andrews Wednesday morning. He attacked incumbent Ralph Yarborough as a disgrace to Texas and stressed unfederalizing the free enterprise system to create jobs while denying radical positions and promising not to attack GOP rivals in the primary.
Floyd Peacock local tax assessor collector announced 4329 motorists in Andrews County purchased auto tags for 1964. Almost 1200 bought plates in the final three days before the April 1 deadline. This total compares favorably with last year’s 4390 plates.

Place 1 candidates include incumbent Lloyd Morgan Buck Harrelson E L Hooper Jr James M Newbrough and Mrs Louis D Barnes. Place 2 candidates include John R Parish Frank H Clements Bob Whorler and Bob W Turnage. Polls open 8 a m to 7 p m Frankel City voting at First Baptist Church with election judge Mrs A L Grant. Andrews voting at the school administration building with election judge Mrs M W Averyt.

Allen Seawright, staff member of the Texas Industrial Commission in Austin, will speak at the mid week chamber luncheon next Wednesday. The event, part of national chamber week April 5 11, is a joint affair with local civic clubs.iday luncheon in the Community building. Before the luncheon Seawright will tour the city with chamber officials. The Industrial Contact Team will meet with the guest in an afternoon conference following the luncheon. Rotary club president Marshall Pharr said the club will attend the luncheon in place of their regular noon meeting.
