Wade Hampton letter urges caution on Reconstruction actions
A July 31 1867 letter from Wade Hampton and about sixty others to General Hampton argues against immediate public action in South Carolina under Reconstruction. It stresses fidelity to the Union, warns against military bills as unconstitutional, urges waiting for federal guidance, and advocates maintaining military governance until a lawful restoration is assured.
