Predicted War Lessons From History and Power Shifts

The essay reflects on failed forecasts of Austro Prussian and American conflicts, arguing that leaders misread military tech and leadership. It discusses Napoleonic era insights, 1806 Jena no one can foretell outcomes, and notes evolving German and French strengths while acknowledging the unpredictable impact of leaders and armies on war results. The piece ends with a call to ongoing analysis rather than political prophecy.

Wedding interrupted by man at Bridgeport altar

Remarkable Escape From a Shipboard Prison Cask

On the voyage of the Alexander from New Orleans to New York a fourteen year old boy, rambunctious and cunning, hid in a cask after threats of confinement. During a storm the cask tipped and rolled into the sea, then floated for forty hours. The boy escaped by force of desperation, aided by a curious cow that knocked the cask against a log, breaking it open. He was found by fisheries men near Appalachicola and sent north via Ontumbas.

Gossip and scandal in society and war reports

Gossip differs from scandal, as rumor harms neighbors without motive while scandal exaggerates truth. The piece critiques gossips as idle talkers who ruin families and friendships, then shifts to wartime dispatches describing heavy losses for the French and Prussians, the brutal efficiency of new weapons, and widespread casualties.
