In Levant Maine, about 100 to 200 residents seized the home of Higgins ally Clement, dragged Higgins from his door, tarred and feathered him, and warned him to leave. Finck Starr was shot and seriously wounded near Homer while attempting to elope with Spencer's 17 year old daughter. Reuben Spencer, a farmer, pursued on horseback and fired, saying he would kill Starr if he saw him with the girl. Starr is hopeful he will recover and marry the girl.
