Since Capt Fuller left Colum bia the recruiting station here is now led by Lieut Williams who also runs the Charleston post. The Kendall building hosts a large sign directing applicants. Williams will visit Columbia on Wednesdays and Saturdays for new enlistments. Recruits are sought for Philippine service and lodging is arranged for accepted men before shipment. Two colored recruits are already in process for the Twenty fifth infantry in San Carlos AZ. A white applicant was accepted for Porto Rico duties. Dr William Wester has been appointed examining surgeon for the station in this city.

Aminta Georgia reports Dr. BEY Mullins of Newton Centre Baptist Church Boston was unanimously elected to head the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Louisville to succeed Dr. Whitsitt. Mullins, 40, a Mississippi native and Boston pastor, previously led Newton Centre Church and served with the foreign missions board. His acceptance awaited. telegrams from Joshua Levering and ex Governor W J Northen conveyed congratulations.
Washington reports a plan to raise 35,000 United States volunteers for two years in the Philippines. Three brigades about 10,000 men will be formed first, then the remainder until the total is reached. No state calls, officers named by the president, units not bound by state lines, and permanent additions to a provisional Army totaling 100,000. General Otis to command 50,000. Wheeler named among officers.
Arlington June 28 report on Confederate graves in Arlington National Cemetery after an inquiry by Adjutant General Corbin. Major True states 136 Confederate dead and civilians are interred, 126 known, 10 unknown, with headstones bearing names but not units. Graves are well cared for alongside Union dead in accordance with regulations.
The American Edible Nut company plans New Jersey incorporation with 25 million capital to control the peanut trade and expand to other nuts and markets. It claims to dominate the world peanut market as demand grows and supply tightens. An unrelated medical promo touts Dr. Cheney’s Catarrh Cure and Pills claiming constitutional treatment and miracle results.
