It urges teachers to be patient and diligent, advocates proper pay, and condemns pay-for-time schemes. The piece stresses mathematics and language as core, arguing education shapes character, opportunity, and race relations, and condemns neglect of schooling as a moral failing.
A Fort Mott letter warns farmers about commercial fertilizers. The author claims decades of overspending on ammoniated goods harmed yields and advocates letting land rest for a year, mixing minimal fertilizer with manure, and relying on soil health over heavy chemical use to boost profits. He cites regional cotton practices and urges agricultural clubs to promote the plan.
An act from the General Assembly establishes highway districts in Laurens, Anderson, Edgefield, Lexington, Marlboro, Richland, Abbeville and Newberry Counties. It authorizes county commissioners to appoint overseers, divide roads into districts, and set duties, terms, and penalties for noncompliance. The Piedmont Manufacturing Company, led by Col. H. P. Hammett, built three cotton mills from 1878 to the present, expanding from 11,000 spindles and 240 looms to a planned 46,524 spindles and 1,812 looms. The new mill on the Anderson County side will power itself by water and steam, drawing workers to a growing village of about 3,000. The project spurred new homes, stores, a church, school, hotel, and a branch railroad, transforming Piedmont into a model factory town with a $500,000 capital and projected value exceeding $1.2 million.
The Pittsburg maker urges a shutdown of most nonassoc factories to curb oversupply and push prices higher. Glass men from this city largely back the plan to form a window glaze trust, while debates unfold at the Washington gathering.
Mrs. James Moohan of Mamien in an Amezan attacked a deputy sheriff and two assistants when a writ of attachment sought a wagon owed by her husband. She struck the officer with a heavy club, hurt the assistant and a passing farmer, then used fists and teeth as the wagon was removed, leaving blood in the yard. A police force is being organized to arrest Mrs. Meghan.
The Byrup Company began manufacturing a concentrated Syrup of Figs to provide an agreeable effective laxative. It is said to be replacing bitter drastic liver medicines and cathartics of the past, and is offered for sale by Simpson, Boid & Co.
