In the Weldon road assault of August 1864 General Hagood of South Carolina led a daring charge to recover a left flank. Amid heavy fire and misreported enemy positions he rallied his brigade as Captain Daly resisted surrender, Hagood and Stoney recapturing the color and driving the attackers back to the valley, preserving the line.
