Lieutenant Governor John C Underwood of Kentucky travels from Atlanta toward New Orleans via Savannah to arrange floral tributes for Chicago as the Confederate monument dedication on May 30 proceeds. The monument, funded mainly by Col Underwood, honors Confederate dead buried in Northern Ireland and features a captured Federal artillery piece. The event will draw both Federal and Confederate generals, with flowers contributed from Savannah Atlanta and New Orleans.
A long letter from Bill Arps recounts travel from Florida to Michigan after a bitter frost that devastated orange groves. He details decayed Florida rail hubs, deserted depots, and the sorrowful journey, noting his granddaughter’s orange tree and a widow’s tale of a daughter buried in a coffin en route to Michigan.
