Spunky waitress thwarts robbery at White Mill Sandwich Shop

In St Louis a 3 year-old waitress Irene Pemrick used a clothes rack to fend off two armed bandits who burst into the White Mill Sandwich Shop. She and bystanders say she kept the felons from shooting, leading to the arrest of Louis Webb, 22, and James Larue, 19, on suspicion of attempted robbery.

Labor Day wreck in Indiana toll rises to 14 dead

A Labor Day traffic disaster in Indiana raised the state death toll to 14 as another victim died at Tipton County Memorial Hospital. Investigators noted the Ind 31 crash near Ind 28 involved Anna Harwell of Indianapolis driving north when her car crossed the road and struck a southbound vehicle. The dead include Anna Harwell and James Edward Harwell, 27, plus James Edward Harwell Jr, 3 months, and Mary F Harwell, Alberta Hendrickson, Joseph M Church, aged 32, all identified from Tipton and nearby towns. Several others were injured. Investigators from Pendleton State Police with Tipton County officials cited hospital refusals for condition updates and noted the Harwell party were reading Bible when the crash occurred. the Church car occupants were deaf mutes and all were described as colored. The crash remains under investigation.

Temperatures Near 100 at Indiana State Fair

Temperatures hovered near one hundred degrees as Labor Day crowds attended the Indiana State Fair opening. Grand Circuit Harness racing started, open stock judging began, and the Red Cross reported treating 289 blisters. Champions included M. H. Routon and son for the Yorkshire boar, Ralph Rinehart and son for the grand champion Duroc boar, with reserve champions shown by C. J. Murphy and family and Bryan Jackson and son. The grand champion in the 4 H colt competition went to Robert Whisman of Cicero.

Robert L. Ramey Dies In Auto Crash

Robert L. Ramey, 60, of Nesro, at 1515 Sherman St., was killed when his car failed to negotiate a turn and crashed into the Regenold garage Sunday night at 9 10. Local authorities listed the incident as a fatal single vehicle crash.

YMCA drive to meet Thursday evening officials named

The $45,000 Anderson YMCA membership and financial campaign will meet at the YMCA at 5 30 pm Thursday to map plans for the annual drive.
