A fierce hurricane sweeps the Northeast causing 34 deaths as landmarks topple. The storm’s reach spurred rescue efforts and warnings across multiple states, with officials counting fatalities and urging precautionary travel measures.
Pendleton police chief Walter Langsdale and Det. Charles Epperson, with state Trooper John Cook, were praised by State Police Supt. Frank A. Jessup for aiding the arrest of John C. Smith and Walter M. Justice in a string of armed robberies across Madison and Henry counties since February 1953.
