Purdue extension guidance covers choosing a tree and site, preparing planting soil with top soil peat moss and fertilizer, digging a hole twice as wide as the root spread and one and a half times the depth, loosening soil, avoiding compaction, spreading roots, watering after planting, and burying the tree a bit deeper than nursery depth.
