GE reports third quarter profits rise on record sales

General Electric Co reported third quarter profits up 11 percent to 66.28 million dollars, or 74 cents a share, on record sales of 1.209 billion. For the first nine months, net income reached a record 192.4 million dollars, or 2.14 a share, with sales at 3.606 billion as retiring Chairman Ralph Cordiner said defense declines were offset by consumer and other product sales. Hurricane Flora feared to have wiped out about a quarter of Cuba’s sugar crop, boosting world prices on London and U.S. markets. About one million tons were believed destroyed. In Washington, plans to sell surplus wheat to the Soviet Union and other Communist countries were endorsed by the American Bankers Association, contingent on terms that bolster U.S. gold and currency holdings to reduce the deficit.
