U N Secretary General Hammar Skjold plans to contact four nations on a trip to press for peace. The report notes strong cold winds and blustery conditions bringing snow to Indiana with highs around the 20s.
President Eisenhower, convalescing from a minor stroke, toured his 496 acre Gettysburg farm for 70 minutes by car and on foot. He was joined by his physician Major General Howard McC. Snyder and later announced new scientific advisers while awaiting the Army-Navy game.
United Press tallies show 225 traffic deaths from 6 p.m. Wednesday through 7 p.m. Friday, with 3 plane crash deaths and 37 in miscellaneous accidents totaling 265 for the holiday period. California led with 22 fatalities. Delaware, Idaho, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, South Carolina, West Virginia, Wyoming and DC reported no road deaths.

Zone One civil defense staff officials plan to attend a state wide meeting at the World War Memorial Auditorium in Indianapolis next Wednesday. James C. Cain and Conrad Boardman will head the local group. Gov Harold W Handley called the meeting to review preparedness with briefings from national offices and federal agencies.
Howard Davis of Anderson the Popcorn King was sentenced in federal court to 15 days in jail for contempt of court. Judge William Steckler held him for filing false wage restitution reports as part of a receivership tied to a $320000 income tax suit against Better Taste Popcorn Inc.
Hi Y clubs from Anderson, Highland and Madison Heights High Schools will stage their 19th Line of Dimes on the corner of 10th and Meridian Streets. Money funds the Christmas party for needy children at the YMCA on Dec 24 with toys, treats, Santa and a short program.
Maurice Warner, 92, died at his home in Summitville after a two year illness. He was vice president emeritus of Summitville Bank and Trust Company and great-uncle of Warner Morgan, current bank secretary. Born August 29, 1865 in Buffalo, he moved to Summitville in 1880 and helped build the family business, becoming cashier in 1894 and later part of the bank merger forming Farmers and Merchants Bank.
One of the year’s largest downtown crowds turned out for the formal opening of the Christmas shopping season in Anderson. Mayor Ralph Ferguson welcomed Santa Claus as lights were turned on, with free movies and candy for children, and merchants reported heavy buying as store hours extend through December 23.
Leland E. Boren executive vice president of Pierce Governor Company announced consolidation of operations. Aircraft Accessories Division on Fairview Street will move to Ohio Avenue plant by Jan 1, creating one-plant operations and curtailing employment though new orders and recalls are expected in early 1958.
President Eisenhower named James M. Doolittle and four leading scientists to a new senior advisory committee and moved the 17 member panel to the White House to tighten ties with the president. The reshaped group, renamed The Presidents Science Advisory Committee, includes Dr. R. F. Bacher Dr. E. M. Purcell Dr. Herbert York and Dr. George B. Kistiakowsky and aims to bolster U S research amid rival Soviet space and missile advances.
John H. Burton Sr. of Anderson will become managing director of Nicholson File Company operations in Europe. He will head the Holland subsidiary in s’Hertogenbosch Netherlands and assumes duties early in January. Burton has led Anderson’s Arcade Works since 1946 and has 44 years with the firm. He previously chaired the Anderson Board of Public Works from 1952 to 1956.
Madison County firemen concluded the muscular dystrophy drive totaling 3586 in Anderson and 153 in Chesterfield and 88 in Alexandria with a countywide count of 3827 so far. Officials expect the 7000 goal may be nearly reached as returns from other towns are awaited.
