Tension Flare Forces Michigan High School Closure
Ann Arbor High School shut for the rest of the week amid rising tensions between white and Negro students. Superintendent W Scott Westerhian will meet with student representatives over the holiday weekend to decide if classes resume Monday. Officials cited fear of violence as the trigger for noon closure after weeks of pushing and shoving. Readiness to address racial inequities sparked student demands including changes in disciplinary policy, more Black faculty hires, and use of the school newspaper to discuss race relations. Students also sought two Civil Rights assemblies annually and a Dr. Martin Luther King award for an outstanding Black student.
