Harold E. Stassen, President Eisenhower's disarmament assistant, reports broad public belief that a workable global arms reduction plan is possible. He notes a flood of mail shows Americans from all walks of life think about peace and favor reciprocal responsibility for success.
The Presidium of the Russian parliament endorsed an eight nation Eastern European military alliance tied to the Warsaw treaty. Prime Minister Bulganin reported on the Warsaw meeting where the treaty was signed. East Germany Czechoslovakia and Hungary had ratified earlier. The Hoover Commission urged removing duplication of federal warehousing space, claiming 100 million square feet unlisted on records and proposing measures to cut 172 million square feet and save 288 million dollars annually. The House passed by 343 to 1 a bill to aid needy families and reduce surplus grain, sending it to the Senate. Fred Marshall of Minnesota cast the lone opposing vote.
Idaho Falls report notes Union Pacific received its first buffalo warning in half a century. The railroad said alerts advised watching for buffaloes between Lima and Butte Montana, northeast near Yellowstone National Park. Roadmaster H F Larsen could not determine the herd’s origin.

Bourt Servant the national director of the American Legion Foreign Relations Commission and a World War II intelligence officer will speak at the Friday noon meeting of the Anderson Chamber of Commerce Legislative Committee at the YMCA. W. Catlin White will chair. Servant will discuss American Far East policies including Formosa China and Korea and the Legion’s Far East policy view.
Health authorities list 640 ill in a three week typhoid outbreak in the Ruhr district. Of those, 30 were hospitalized in the past 48 hours. Three deaths are attributed to the outbreak traced to a contaminated well at a dairy plant.
Mounted police charged a wall of 250 marching youths in Pelham Bay Park to break up an impending clash. A mostly Negro gay holiday crowd drank beer and liquor at picnic tables as small fights erupted before park staff and 150 officers dispersed the scene. No arrests were reported.
Norman Beard of Akron chosen from 332 nominees to receive a Rockefeller Brothers Fund theologic study fellowship through the American Association of Theological Schools. He will study a year at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Beard was one of 47 graduates selected from U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities for the award.
Sweikert of Indianapolis drove the Zink Special to victory in the Memorial Day 500 mile race as Bill Vukovich of Fresno died in a late pileup along the backstretch. Eight others injured, wind hampered speeds, Vukovich had set track speed records previously.
Tito and Soviet leaders wrap up a day of discussions on Soviet Yugoslav relations on Brioni Island. They tour the Adriatic isle in an open Cadillac as talks emphasize mutual understanding with Tito seeking specific guarantees and the Russians seeking broader cooperation and a possible Big Four framework.
Relatives of Edward S. Lindley and Bertha Lindley in Kokomo insist the pair, held in Ocala for the shooting deaths of three Florida police officers, were never in any trouble before. Florida authorities report many loaded weapons found at the Lindley home and in a garage, sparking planned grand jury action.

The Associated Press reports seven deaths over the holiday weekend in Indiana. Frederick J. A. Deveraux, 42, of Chicago, died when his car’s rear end was struck after a tire blew on US 41 south of Sterling in Fountain County. His wife Jeanne suffered head lacerations. Charles Robinson, 43, of Cayuga, drove the truck that passed over the auto and left the scene uninjured. A 3-year-old boy, Francis Paul Hofer of Indianapolis, drowned in a private fishing lake southeast of the city while attempting to retrieve a boat.
In Louisville Kentucky Mrs Bobbie Clay was fined five dollars in court for disorderly conduct after a passerby shouted at two dogs prompting them to flee from a dog catcher. The judge noted dog catchers already face trouble catching dogs without audience interference.
Senator Lehman of New York urged Congress to build a Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. He said he will introduce a bill to create a commission to plan the memorial.
Police sources report a band of black market speculators in dollars has been broken up in Buenos Aires with 20 arrests.
Safety officials warn Memorial Day weekend deaths may set a new high as tolls rise. The National Safety Council cited 300 deaths by Monday evening and projected up to 375 by the end of the 78 hour period, with drownings at 111 and total fatalities near 484 including miscellaneous accidents. State tallies list multiple fatalities across many states.
In Blackwell Oklahoma a hospital death today marked the 20th storm fatality as the city skipped Memorial Day observances to bury victims from last Wednesday night’s tornado. Joseph Wills aged 89 died this morning establishing the final tally in the northeast Blackwell devastation.
United States urges Red China to free 52 more Americans, following four pilot releases. India’s V K Krishna Menon relays hope for additional airmen to be freed soon. Dag Hammarskjold says Chou En Lai sent a letter indicating the four may reach Hong Kong and the remaining eleven are considered spies.
Acting Secretary Herbert Hoover Jr and Walter Robertson monitored developments over Memorial Day as word from New Delhi indicated a Menon announcement. US officials expect the airmen to reach Hong Kong Tuesday and the Air Force is ready to take custody and begin their homeward journey once released. State Department notes include Chinese students in the United States connected to the case.
Memorial Day weekend passed with light traffic and a subdued mood as residents returned home. Courthouse ceremonies and a 9th Street Bridge program honored about 2,600 Madison County veterans with flags by local Veterans groups, led by the Women's Relief Corps.
