GOP Leaders Fail In Bid To Restore House Defense Fund

The House passed a defense appropriations bill totaling 33.56 billion dollars for the next fiscal year, 2% below President Eisenhower’s request. GOP leaders failed 242 to 151 to send the bill back to committee to restore 313 million in cuts, instead approving 39 to 41 and sending it to the Senate. The act cuts Army, Navy, and Air Force funding, with amendments offering limited restorations totaling about 2144 million, mostly for Air Force civil navigation costs.
