Thousands of troops and police battled rioting convicts and demonstrators around Mountjoy Prison in Dublin. IRA prisoners led the uprising from the roof as guards fought to retake the fortress amid tear gas, broken bars, and fires. Two officers and a convict were wounded.
The House approved a 13.2 million cut to United Nations dues within a 4.58 billion State Department bill for FY starting July 1. The cut lowers the U S assessment to 25 percent of the UN budget, down from 31.5 percent, saving about 29 million for multilateral commitments.
A community fish fry event is scheduled at the Senior Citizens Center located at 1405 Rangeline Rd N on Friday May 19 at 4:08 PM. Local organizers invite residents to attend and support senior programs.
Three bags of dimes fell from a Brinks armored car on U S 6 two miles east of Napanee. Authorities cleared the scene as Brinks workers scooped up the coins totaling about 3000 or 30000 dimes. Police kept traffic moving while witnesses gathered for leftovers. Brinks offered no figures or reasons yet.
Robert Lee Johnson 51 died after being stabbed in the visitor's room at Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary. His son Robert, of Greenwood Indiana, was arraigned in Williamsport federal court. FBI investigates. Johnson served 25 years for espionage and had been at Lewisburg since Aug 7, 1965. His home was Alexandria Virginia.
