Elwood Madison County teachers seek 12 percent raise

Area teachers announced during negotiations with the Elwood community school board a demand for a 12 percent salary hike. The board had offered a $200 across the board increase plus 2.8 to 1.7 percent raises by experience, while the teachers cite a 5.2 percent cost of living factor and note no change since January 1971. They accuse the district of breaking a promise of seven percent in 1972 and say salaries in Elwood are the lowest in Madison County. The Madison-Grant board reportedly offered three non salary terms including a $100 insurance contribution, more paydays, and payroll deductions for credit unions, but no salary increase.
