President Eisenhower secured strong support in Nebraska’s presidential primary with 17 of 18 delegates backing him. The Nebraska results push his pledged and public delegates to 666, surpassing a 662 convention majority. he will gain 18 more in Oregon where unopposed.
The 1955 National Fire Prevention Association contest awards went to Anderson and Alexandria Fire Departments and Guide Lamp Division. Anderson won national first in 50 000 to 100 000 population cities and Indiana top. Alexandria earned national first for 5 000 to 20 000 cities and second in Indiana. Guide Lamp topped Indiana industrial fire prevention and ranked among national leaders.
Senator Estes Kefauver arrived in Oregon from Washington to campaign for write in votes in the Democratic presidential primary. The Tennessee senator cut his state tour short for a Senate debate in Washington. Kefauver and former Gov Adlai Stevenson vie for Oregon s 16 delegates though neither appears on the ballot. The AMA president urged doctors to be more cooperative with the press and avoid hiding their work.
In Houston Texas a man asked Tax Assessor Carl Smith to exchange his license plates. He explained the issue was not the number but the letters on the plate. Smith read the plate and found it began P U.

Ander son High School will honor 29 students at the Annual Out-of-School Honor Day Program in the gym at 8 30 a m today. The public is invited as civic groups present awards including those from the American Association of University Women American Cancer Society Altrussa Club American Legion and its auxiliary and other local organizations.
The 1956 Anderson Free Fair will open Monday July 2 at Athletic Park for a six day run. A fireworks display on opening day precedes the Fourth of July Celebration at the race track infield. Harness racing and Olson Midway Shows will run four nights with a children's day planned at reduced prices. Races offer prizes from 350 to 1500 dollars drawing strong trotters and pacers.

The final Memorial Day Committee meeting is at 7 PM in the GAR room at the courthouse with representatives from the United Spanish American War Veterans, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Women's Relief Corps.
About 250 inmates at Florida State Penitentiary stormed work, toppled guards with improvised weapons, and sparked a deadly volley of gunfire. One prisoner Casmir J. Bonis died, while nine others were wounded, as authorities quelled the uprising at Raiford.

An unemployed Anderson man admitted the Campbellsburg State Bank holdup to State Police and FBI early Thursday and led officers to buried cash and robbery gear. Clifford Cauble, 32, was held on bank robbery charges with a $50 000 bond after he identified himself to bank staff and police recovered $3 145 and other items, while an additional $300 was found in Anderson. Authorities continue pursuit of a second suspect in the Clayton bank robbery.
Governor Craig rejected a proposed oil drilling operation in Hovey Lake State Game Preserve saying the public interest supports abandoning the idea for now. He noted oil may remain for future decision by the General Assembly and called the controversy ended.

Eisenhower proposed 500 million dollars in advance soil bank payments this year drew sharp ridicule in the Senate on Thursday as a political lollipop. Sen Ellender from Louisiana called it a will-o-the-wisp and the Senate Agriculture Committee warned against paying for it next year. The bill, approved by the House, would replace the vetoed catch-all farm bill and would not fund 1956 soil bank payments to farmers who withdraw crop acreage.
