Old Light Plant Demolition Planned After Delays

The Works Board, delayed from Tuesday, will likely award a demolition contract for the city’s old light plant at Cincinnati and Wheeler. Demolition will occur in two phases and aims for completion by fall, aiding the Cincinnati Avenue extension tied to $470,000 in revenue sharing expenditures. Bids ranged from 48,000 to 142,000 with King Wrecking of Cincinnati the low bidder. The project follows an electrical rate study by O'Brien & Gere, which urged razing the deteriorated plant though a new peaking plant remains a distant possibility pending Indiana Michigan Electric petition outcomes.

Elwood Mayor Gene Smith opposes it citing costs and questions about state funding while noting revenue sharing could offset levy gains. Anderson Mayor Robert Rock supports some plan but warns rejection could freeze the 1973 levy and hinder raises for police and fire crews.
