Federal inquiry flags $100 million in excess power charges
Federal investigators scrutinize wholesale electric sales during the 110 day coal strike. William W. Lindsay testifies that emergency rates far exceeded costs, with add-on charges stacked across intervening systems and passed to consumers as fuel adjustments. Senate panel probes reflect concerns over emergency pricing and consumer impact.
State and federal cooperate in utilities overcharge probe
Indiana Public Service Commission chairman says state will cooperate with a federal inquiry into possible overcharging by electric utilities during the coal strike. He notes PSC lacks jurisdiction to launch an own probe while federal regulators study refunds if overcharges are confirmed. Transit of power from other systems and 10 percent transfer charges are cited as drivers of fuel adjustment costs passed to consumers amid the 110 day strike.
