A New Jersey bar report condemns Sen McCarthy for improper conduct during espionage hearings at Fort Monmouth. It cites denial of cross examination, hearsay tests, and accusations against witnesses under the espionage act despite no guilt determination.
Benjamin Trimble, born into slavery in Virginia, turned 104 in Tacoma on Tuesday. He rose early to chop wood, saw a doctor for the first time in decades, plans an airplane ride over Seattle's aircraft plant, and enjoys walks, games with neighborhood kids, sassafras tea, and faith.
Off Korea, U S Sabre jets and Chinese Red MiGs traded fire with both sides claiming success. A Peiping radio claimed Sabres were shot at near Manchurian islands while the U S Air Force reported two MiGs shot down and two more probably down. Also noted is a local Madison County fatality and a House vote defeating Alaska statehood, with Hawaii and Alaska potential separate consideration later.
President Eisenhower, with Britain and France, invited Soviet Premier to a top level Big Four talk to address East West tensions. They delivered a Moscow note proposing a two stage approach to solutions and warned against expecting quick results from a summit.
Houston Texas man James E. Black 37 denied swindling two Indiana women and others out of about 150000. He was arraigned on National Stolen Property Act charges with bonds set at 25000. FBI lists aliases Londos Fisher and Tabor. Black arrested at Hotel Netherlands Plaza as he met a wealthy southern woman. An associated federal indictment cites Ethel Hembroff and others as alleged victims.
The Madison County Council opened consideration of over 180000 in additional appropriations at the courthouse. Debates focus on salary increases for about 50 deputies across multiple offices and county employees, plus civil defense funds for two emergency rescue vehicles and money for ten voting machines.
The June bride should visit her local Social Security Office after her wedding to update her name on the account card. She keeps the same number but must display the married name, says Herman Landes, manager of the office.
Anderson Police Chief J. D. Coen released the April department report. Stolen property valued at 8,244 with 6,620 recovered by officers. The single April bad check case closed. Washington officials declined to testify before a House committee probing Salk polio vaccine handling. Surgeon General Leonard Scheele and Mrs Hobby said they could not appear now and would provide more information later. Rep Spence noted their position as the House Banking Committee leads the inquiry.
The Madison County Planning Commission met at the courthouse and approved two petitions for additional subdivisions for the establishment Vision plats were discussed. Two zoning petitions saw final action tabled pending revision, with Ray Wood presiding.
The planning commission approved Bennett Heights with 32 lots southwest of Hamilton and Norwood Hills on East Cross Street Road. A Fire Chief Tibbetts note cites April department report with 62 fire calls, 48 fire related, and five false alarms. Rezoning by James McDonald and Mary Metion seeks a retail furniture site near Ind. 67 and Ind. 9, proposing business use for a 160 by 120 foot cement block building with parking. Clyde H Frost plans rezone near Hamilton Road for a service station.
The first annual Book of Golden Deeds award was presented to Miss Mattie B. Fry for over 25 years of service to Anderson public schools, with Dr. W. H. Bransford accepting on her behalf due to her health. Rev. George Harris and Ozora White led the ceremony at the YMCA.
