Board Of Works Lets Contract For Junk Sale

The Board of Public Works awarded a contract for junk sale from the Municipal Light and Power plant to Glazer Brothers. Glazer bid 26.40 per hundred pounds of copper wire, 30.80 per ton for mixed iron, and 56 per ton for transformers. Other bidders were Acme Iron and Metal and Phillips Iron and Coal. Frank Yarling outlined plans to improve lighting at Shadyside Park softball field.

Ministers Endorse Second Hospital Plan In Anderson

The Anderson Ministerial Association met to approve a resolution calling for a second hospital in the city. The document urged ministers to support any campaign advancing the project and was signed by Rev. Wilbur V. Day and Albert F. Byrne. In Indianapolis, James W Sadler, 18, was fatally stabbed during a dispute with his brother over a dresser mirror. Ralph Sadler, 17, faces a preliminary murder charge.

Four Lives Lost in Indiana Drowning Heat Wave

The Associated Press reports two days of extreme heat in Indiana left four people dead or missing. Wesley Dancey, 21, of Hebron, died in a county road crash near Gary just before a speeding case appearance. Cordelia Kissick, 18 months, of New Castle, died after a cat attack before her grandparents home. Marvin Clark, 27, of New Castle, failed to see the child. Timothy Konzen, 15, a Cathedral High freshman, drowned in Big Eagle Creek near Indianapolis. Michael Pullins, 2, and his mother Mrs. Charles Pullins drowned in a horse watering tank northeast of Rensselaer.

Plane Crashes in Atlantic Destroys U S Air Force Tanker

A U S Air Force Flying Tanker carrying nine men caught fire and crashed in the stormy Atlantic about 90 miles off Iceland. Rescue planes found an oil slick and wreckage but no signs of survivors as Iceland and Britain joined in the Air-Sea Rescue effort. The tanker from the 310th Air Refueling Squadron based in Salina Kansas was on an overseas duty. distress signals indicated fire en route from Keflavik Iceland to Scu n Scotland.

Eisenhower Wins Senate Support for Trade Bill Extension

The Senate approved Eisenhower's foreign trade bill 73 to 13, extending the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Law to 1958 and granting the President power to cut tariffs in three 5 percent steps to win concessions. Two Madison County youths plead not guilty to burglary charges

Two youths arraigned in Madison Circuit Court on second degree burglary charges. Lowell Rector is accused of breaking into a home near Alexandria on April 9 and Ellie Ryan faces an April 27 burglary charge. Trial dates remain to be set by Judge Russell E. Stewart. Both defendants are released on bond along with four others named in the affidavits.

Jury acquits ousted prosecutor in Alabama vice death case

A jury in Birmingham clears A. L. Patterson of murder in the 18 June death of Arch Ferrell a former chief deputy sheriff tied to Phenix City racketeering. Ferrell was convicted earlier and sentenced to life for the same case while Patterson vowed to root out corruption and had led a reform drive.

Mental Health Drive Launch to Begin in County

Former Gov Henry Schricker state campaign chairman will speak at the Madison County Mental Health Association dinner May 12 at the Anderson County Club. Wirt Named President of Kikthawenund Scout Council

J Raymond Wirt, Anderson resident and Delco Remy welding section leader, was named to succeed J B Stephens as president of the four county Kikthawenund Area Council Boy Scouts of America. The area saw 85 degrees at the City Larcage Treatment Plant yesterday with a 55 degree low for the 23 hour period ending 6 pm. Minor showers were noted late yesterday evening and last night as the forecast called for partly cloudy to clear skies today.
