Crucial test awaited for mine opening in WV strike end

After 109 days the United Mine Workers’ long running contract dispute ends with ratification of a new pact by 56,000 to 42,000 votes. The deal includes a 39 percent wage and benefits rise through 1981 and an immediate hourly boost from 7.30 to 8.00, but some health benefits are lost. Union leaders warn peace remains fragile amid financial pressures and lingering labor tensions in Appalachia.
