Protest over South Africa policy dulls at Vanderbilt tennis
About 2,000 demonstrators led by Dick Gregory and Ossie Davis rallied near Vanderbilt University in Nashville to protest apartheid and South Africa's participation in the Davis Cup matches. The march from the state Capitol to Centennial Park featured gospel music, poetry, civil rights slogans, and calls to end racial segregation. Organizers hoped for up to 40,000 but police estimated 2,000 with no violence. The event drew students from black colleges and anti-apartheid coalitions, while a separate smaller rally occurred at Vanderbilt Memorial Gymnasium where the North American Zone Finals were under way.
