Beatification of Mother Seton Seen as Boost for American Saints

Vatican reports say the beatification of Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton may lead to further American sainthood and elevate other U S Catholics. Seton, born in New York in 1774 and died in Emmitsburg Maryland in 1821, was canonized at St Peter's Basilica. Pope John XXIII met a 3 000 strong American pilgrimage including Archbishops Spellman Ritter and Shehan and Mother Seton's Sisters of Charity. He praised their work and urged continued service.
