Hair hoax suspect found innocent by reason of insanity
Joseph Smietana 32 of Hobart was declared legally sane by a Lake County court and held for psychiatric testing after a trial over claims he posed as a doctor and urged women to burn their hair. He faced charges of practicing medicine without a license and harassment by telephone. Police traced calls to more than 30 women in 1978 and 1977 linked to birth announcements.
