Court Rules Evidence Searches Constitutional in Offices
The Supreme Court, in a 7-2 decision, ruled authorities may search a person’s office, seize business records, and use them as evidence without forcing testimony against the individual. The ruling maintains the Fifth Amendment protection while allowing administrative searches under a compelling governmental objective. Justices Skevens Brennan Marshall dissented, calling it an hollow guarantee and urging stricter need for evidence. The decision also addressed illegitimate children and Social Security dependency documents, with a 6-4 vote upholding document production to determine dependency.
