Senate rejects move to cut defense costs in Senate vote
The Senate defeated 88 to 24 a Proxmire McC amendment to force a major cut in military spending. Proxmire argued reductions would shift priorities and save about 26 billion, while supporters warned deep cuts could undermine Vietnam efforts and federal programs. The stopgap funding measure to August 6 passed by voice vote after the defeat.
