Equality In Sports Spending Nixed in Regulation Debate
Washington AP says new regulations aimed at banning sex discrimination under Title IX will not require equal spending across male and female athletic programs. Health Secretary Caspar Weinberger defended the rules before the House Postsecondary Education Subcommittee, noting the guidance is illustrative not binding. He argued the goal is equal opportunity while allowing colleges flexibility in implementation, and that the NCAA misinterprets the provisions. The committee reviews conformity with the President’s intent as the timetable for a final rule proceeds.
