Strayed Jet Pilots Saved Near Hainan Island Incident
Two U S Navy pilots aboard a Phantom fighter were rescued after their aircraft strayed into Chinese airspace near Hainan Island during the Vietnam war era. The defense department said navigational gear and communication problems likely caused the incursion and that no injuries occurred. The Pentagon noted this was the third time this year U S planes operating in the Vietnam theater might have violated Red Chinese airspace.
