Supreme Court bars most private schools from race based admission
In a 7-2 ruling the Supreme Court held that the 1868 Civil Rights Act bars private, commercially operated schools from denying admission to black students. The decision targets so called white flight academies while leaving open questions for sectarian schools discriminating on religious grounds. The ruling also says whites have protection against reverse discrimination under the act and returns a reverse case involving two white workers to the lower court.
