Warden Lane Denies Parole Involvement In Killer Release

In Brownstown Indiana warden Ward Lane rejected charges of contempt of court and said parole decisions rest with the state parole board and Governor Welsh. He denied involvement in the release of George Rariden 75 Bedford who killed Bert Butler 85 Bedford quarry foreman after a dispute over hunting on Rariden property. Rariden was released on Welsh recommendation following cancer claims by the correction and parole departments. Prosecutor Skinner asked a Jackson County judge to cite Lane and Campbell for contempt for failing to return Rariden to prison. Lane said he had not been notified and learned of the action only from newspapers.
