Court Ruling Limits Bible Reading in Public Schools
The Supreme Court's eight‑to‑one decision restricts devotional practices in public schools but allows teaching of religion as part of literature or history. Justices Goldberg and Harlan note that many laws and values stem from religious teachings, while the decision leaves room for chaplains in institutions and for teaching about religion separate from worship. The ruling also addresses unemployment denial to a Seventh-day Adventist worker who refused Saturday work, with dissent from Justices Harlan and White.
